Healthcare reform is upon us, and the reality is healthcare costs continue to rise across the United States. In 2012, Transport America spent over $8 million on medical costs for our employees, and we believe these costs will continue to escalate. As a company, we are very concerned about our employees' health and there are some key trends that became clearly evident. We have a driver population with an average age in the low 50's; we tend to be overweight, while having blood pressure and blood sugar risk factors. Unfortunately, this is common in the trucking industry.
As a company, we want to try to change these trends and help our entire workforce. We believe the key to improvement lies in 3 areas: prevention, nutrition, and exercise.
This year, Transport America has taken an active stance in helping our employees take the wheel to a healthier lifestyle. We initially started with our Wellness Blitz in March, where we focused on prevention. In 2012, we found only 1 in 10 of our employees utilized preventative services. These services are covered by the company at 100% but are still being underutilized. So, we figured if drivers are too busy to do this while they were at home, we would bring some of these services to them. We had over 340 participants in the event, offering employees an opportunity to have a wellness screen, which included a blood screen for cholesterol and blood sugar levels. They also completed blood pressure and body mass index checks, along with private consultation. Employees were also given tips on how to stop using tobacco.
The second area we'll be putting attention is nutrition while on the road. We understand that the choices are limited and eating healthy requires focus. Nutrition plays a vital role in our overall health, including risk reduction and disease prevention. The goal for this campaign starts with education and urging our drivers to seek healthier food options while on the road. Being prepared, planning your meals, and committing to healthier alternatives is the first step. We've done some small things, such as improving our vending selections with healthier options. In July, we will be having another Blitz that focuses specifically on nutrition.
The next area that Transport America will spotlight is exercise. This is critically important, both physically and mentally as you are on the road. You have a stressful job, and being away from your loved ones adds to this stress. A great way to reduce this is through an exercise program. We are currently testing the FIT system with 5 drivers. This is an in-cab exercise system that uses bands and has exercises designed for the driver. We also have implemented a gym reimbursement program, with over 4,000 gyms across the US participating. More good news here, truck stops, such as Pilot have plans to put fitness centers in their stops in the near future.
By participating in some type of physical activity once a day, you can increase aerobic health, strengthen muscle, and reduce stress. We will be doing a third campaign during driver appreciation week focused on exercise. We know life on the road is demanding, and Transport America has the greatest drivers in the business. We want to help you take the wheel in driving to a healthier lifestyle. Preventative care will help identify potential risk and problems early, while a balanced diet, coupled with an exercise program, will not only make you feel better but keeps you healthier for your family. We'll continue to focus on improving our programs and opportunities for you to live a healthier lifestyle. Safety and wellness start with you.
